I joined Community Club back in 2004 during my sophomore year at School Without Walls Senior High School. I was unsure of what to expect, but looking back on it, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I was paired with my tutor Sharmila who at the time worked for the World Bank. Sharmila traveled all over the globe for both work and leisure and always made sure to send me a postcard from her travels. I told Sharmila that I aspired to be like her someday and travel the world. I made that dream a reality in 2010 when I decided to study abroad in Italy; since then I have traveled to over 15 different countries. Just like her, I now send postcards to friends and family of all my travels. Had it not been for Community Club I would have never met Sharmila and for that I am forever thankful. Community Club provides free meals, a safe space, and services of mentoring and tutoring for students of all ages in the District of Columbia. They also provide scholarships for students wishing to pursue higher education. Community Club is certainly a hidden gem that needs more investment from its community, advocates, and alumni. With more support, they can be helping more students like myself to be agents of change and positive role models for those to come.
